According to a new study in the journal Nutrition Bulletin, women from all age groups are risking their health by failing to eat a healthy diet.
Scientists at Manchester Metropolitan University conducted a review of 110 published papers in order to study women's
dietary habits.
They concluded that women often fail to eat balanced meals, while many consume junk food on a regular basis or are obsessed with unhealthy eating fads.
More than half of 11 to 18-year-olds do not get enough key vitamins, while 20 percent of 19 to 50-year-olds do not consume enough iron.
The researchers also observed that up to 80 percent of adult women do not get the recommended amount of vitamin D, which is required to prevent brittle bones and a number of other health problems.
Dr Carrie Ruxton, a dietician at the Health Supplements Information Service (HSIS), which commissioned the research, said: 'The quality of a woman's diet is fundamentally important across her lifespan, not only during the childbearing years.
'Women need to make better dietary choices to ensure that they consume enough vitamins and minerals and, thus, safeguard their health.'
